Canadian Apparel Insights

 

Retail Apparel Update

  • Canada Goose’s sales in Canada increased 2.5% in its Q1 2025 ending June 29. 2025. 

  • Gildan’s sales in Canada in its Q2 ending June 2025 increased 16.5%. The manufacturer's Canadian sales increased 13.5% in the first half of 2025.

  • Columbia Sportswear Canada reported that sales in its second quarter ending June 30, 2025, increased 2%. Sales in the first half of the year fell 5%.

  • Carter’s Canada comp sales increased 7.6% in its Q2 2025 ending June 28. At the quarter’s end, it operated 192 stores, four more than a year earlier.

  • Clair’s Canada, with 120 stores, sought creditor protection at the outset of August 2025. Its sales for the current 12 months decreased 19% and its net income was a negative US$5.8 million.

  • Marks total sales during Q2 2025 increased 1.9%, while its comp sales were up 1.0%. Sales growth was held down by softer casualwear and outerwear sales.

  • Sport Chek’s total sales during Q2 2025 increased 3.3%, while its comp sales were up 3.9%. It was the fourth consecutive quarter of comparable sales growth for the retailer.

Key Metrics

  • Total retail apparel sales increased 9.6% in the first five months of 2025 and were up 9.5% (ytd).

  • Apparel specialty store sales in Canada increased 8.8% in the first 5 months of 2025.

  • Canadian apparel exports decreased by 3.6% in June. Apparel exports to the U.S. were up 15.6% year to date. During June 2025 apparel imports increased 13.6% and were up 16.8% YTD.

  •  Canadian apparel manufacturer’s sales in June 2025 increased 9.6%, however, they were down 5.2% YTD.

  • The Canadian apparel price index (CPI) decreased 0.5% in June 2025 but was up 0.2% over last year.

  • The Canadian denim jeans market was valued at US$2,803 million. Men's denim accounted for 53.4% of denim sales.

U.S. Apparel Insights

Retail Apparel Update

  • Target has joined Walmart and Amazon in discontinuing its price marketing guarantee.

  • According to the OECD during 2024, 67.2% of individuals in the U.S. ordered goods online vs. 78.3% in Canada.

  • Amazon’s share of the U.S apparel market in 2024 increased to 16.2% from 15.2%. Walmart’s share in 2024 was  6.4% up from 6.2% the previous year.

  • Kontoor Brands (i.e. Lee, Wrangler sales) increased 6.5% in only the U.S. during Q2 2025.

Key Metrics

  • The value of U.S. apparel imports from China fell in May 2025 to their monthly lowest level in 22 years. In May 2025, U.S. apparel imports from Mexico increased 12%.

  • Sales in U.S. apparel stores during July increased 5.0% from July 2024 and were up 4.2% in the first seven months of 2025.

  • U.S. apparel prices increased 0.1% in July 2025 over the previous month and were down 0.5% over the past year.
