Canadian Apparel Insights

Retail Apparel Update

  • Canadian apparel e-commerce sales in 2024 increased 1.9% to C$7,373 million according to Trendex.

  • Lululemon’s sales during Q1 2025 in only its 71 Canadian stores increased 3.8% and accounted for 12.3% of its parent company’s total sales.

  • DSW Canada, operator of 175 shoe specialty stores, reported that its total sales in Q1 2025 decreased 2.9%, while its comparable sales declined 9.2%

  • Reitmans (Canada) sales fell 4.1% in its Q1 2025. Comp sales fell 4.5%.

  • Groupe Dynamite’s Canadian sales increased 9.7% in Q1 2025.

  • Roots' total DTC sales in Q1 2025 increased 10.0%, while its comp sales were up 14.1%.

 

Key Metrics

  • Total retail apparel sales increased 7.1% in the first quarter of 2025.

  • Apparel specialty store sales in Canada increased 12.7% during Q1 2025.

  • Canadian apparel exports increased by 14% in April. Apparel exports to the U.S. were up 17.5% year to date. During April 2025, apparel imports increased 11.0% and were up 17.1% YTD.

  • Canadian apparel manufacturer’s sales in April 2025 decreased 0.5%  and were down 9.7% YTD.

  • The apparel price index (CPI) increased 0.3% in April 2025 but was down 1.5% from a year earlier.

  • Canadian apparel manufacturing during Q1 2025 operated at 78.9% of production capacity, a 4.1% increase over the previous year.

U.S. Apparel Insights

Retail Apparel Update

  • Macy’s Inc.'s net sales decreased 5.1% in its Q1 2025, while its comp sales fell 2.0%. Macy’s sales were down 6.5%, while Bloomingdale’s increased 2.6%.

  • Lululemon’s sales in the U.S. increased by only 1.6% in its Q1 2025.

  • Kohl’s total sales decreased 4.1%, while its comparable sales fell 3.9% in its Q1 2025.

  • Burlington plans to open 100 net new stores in fiscal 2025 with additional momentum from acquiring 46 Joann Fabrics leases for fiscal 2026.

  • Groupe Dynamite’s U.S. sales increased 31.9% in its Q1 2025.

Key Metrics

  • Sales in U.S. apparel stores during May fell 0.8% from April 2025 but were up 3.7% from a year earlier.

  • U.S. apparel prices decreased 0.4% in April 2025 over the previous month and were down 0/9% (Y/Y).
