Canadian Apparel Update

Apparel specialty stores (69.5%), off-price retailers (10.9%), and discount stores (7.0%) were the largest channels of distribution for apparel in 2024

Winners in 2024 were Canada’s largest individual retailer (7.3%) followed by Walmart (5.5%), lululemon (5.3%) and Marks (3.6%). The ten largest apparel retailers during 2024 accounted for 36.3% of apparel sales.

Aritzia's total Canadian sales in 2024 increased 4.6% to C$1.2 billion.

Columbia Sportswear Canada's sales decreased 6.1% in the first quarter of 2025.

Children’s Place Canada sales decreased by 17.6% in 2024, while Carter’s Canada sales fell by 5.9%.

Mark's sales increased 3.4% in Q1 2025, while Sport Chek’s total sales increased by a strong 6.3%.

Canada Goose sales increased 1.1% in 2024. While its direct-to-consumer sales increased by 5.1%. Wholesale sales decreased 16.5%.

TJX Canada’s sales in its first quarter of 2025 increased 3%.

Savers Value Village Canada, one of Canada’s largest resale retailers of apparel, registered during Q1 2025 a 2.2% decrease in its currency-adjusted sales.

Total retail apparel sales increased 5.6% in the first two months of 2025.

Canadian apparel exports increased by only 1.4% in March. Apparel exports to the U.S. were up 17.5% year to date.

U.S. Apparel Insights
Retail Apparel Update

Aritzia’s total U.S. sales in 2024 increased 17.4%.

Primark’s annual U.S. sales in 2024 increased 17.7%.

Saks and Amazon have partnered to launch a new luxury storefront on Amazon. The site does not include dynamic pricing or customer reviews. Saks is responsible for fulfillment.

Apparel is the most returned item by U.S. online shoppers. Twenty-five percent of those purchasing apparel online returned at least one apparel item in 2024.

Both Shein and Temu, beginning in March 2025, significantly cut back their U.S. digital advertising.

The agreement to lower U.S. tariffs on apparel shipments from China to 30% from 145% for the next three months has prompted U.S. retailers to restart orders and shipments.
